The Four Tones
Unit 1 — Pronunciation
Mandarin has four tones plus a neutral tone. The same syllable 'ma' can mean mother (mā), hemp (má), horse (mǎ), or scold (mà). Getting tones right is the single biggest unlock for being understood.
No Conjugation, No Tenses
Grammar — Simplicity
Chinese verbs never change form — no past tense, no future tense, no conjugation tables. 我吃 (I eat), 我吃了 (I ate), 我要吃 (I will eat). Context and particles do the work.
Measure Words (量词)
Unit 2 — Essential Concept
Chinese uses measure words between numbers and nouns — like 'a cup of' or 'a piece of' in English, but for everything. 一个人 (one person), 一本书 (one book), 一杯水 (one cup of water). 个 is the universal fallback.
